What is the meaning of Qurbani?
Qurbani is the practice of ritual sacrifice performed during the festival of Eid al-Adha. It serves as a commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) ultimate act of submission and gratitude to Allah (SWT). It is also recognized as one of the required rituals of Hajj.
How is the Cost of Qurbani determined?
The financial contribution required for Qurbani depends on two main factors: the type of animal selected and the country where the sacrifice is performed. Specific costs for various options are typically detailed by the organization when you proceed with your donation.
Which types of animals are permissible for sacrifice?
The animals that are permitted for Qurbani are sheep, goats, cows, and camels. To ensure the sacrifice is valid, the animal must meet specific standards regarding its age and overall health.
For whom is Qurbani considered compulsory?
In the view of the majority of Muslim scholars, Qurbani is required for every mentally sound individual who possesses wealth exceeding their essential needs (Nisab). Generally, anyone who qualifies to pay Zakat is also obliged to offer a Qurbani. The Nisab refers to the minimum value of surplus assets that makes a person liable for Zakat payment.
Am I permitted to perform Qurbani on behalf of others?
Yes, it is permissible to offer Qurbani on behalf of family members, beloved ones who have passed away, or even on behalf of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
When is the Qurbani ritual performed?
The Qurbani is carried out after the Eid al-Adha prayer, spanning the 10th, 11th, and 12th days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. Organizations make every effort to conduct the sacrifice on the first day of Eid; however, to ensure completion, this period may extend until the end of the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.
When will Eid al-Adha occur in 2026?
The commencement of Eid al-Adha in 2026 is projected to begin on the evening of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and continue until Saturday, May 30, 2026.
What is the distinction between Qurbani and Udhiyah?
Fundamentally, these two terms refer to the same religious act. Udhiyah is the Arabic term meaning “blood sacrifice.” Qurbani is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic Qurban, signifying an act performed to seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT). Although Udhiyah is also used, the term Qurbani is significantly more common among Muslims, particularly in regions like the UK
